THE STRUGGLE OF THE GENERATION GAP

The generation gap is the difference in opinions, ideologies, perceptions, beliefs and thoughts among the people of two different generations. In the generation gap people from two different generations hold two different perspectives about the same concepts. It is a well-known fact that new time demands a new way of thinking. A new way of thinking demands new way of acting and new way of acting arouses misunderstandings on the part of the older generation. Today because of the generation gap, both generations have been struggling a lot because of it. Respect for ones elder family members has undergone a transformation in the last couple of years. Today’s grandparents grew up with the thought that children should be seen and not heard. They want children to demonstrate respect for elders and individuals in general and many are appalled by children’s behavior. In earlier generations, as a child, you respected your parents’ discipline and you did what you were told; when you were told to do it. Your children today might be treated as equals within your family, although you provide limits and structure. Grandparents may still hold the mentality that we children should simply follow the instructions given and not question how or why. Family conflicts may arise when a younger family member challenges an elder’s opinion. Cellphones, smart phones, computers have developed hence today’s generation lives and breathes technology. The toys of the younger generation are likely to even be electronic in nature, such as computer games to teach letter and numbers and devices for brain enhancement of the child. Today’s generation strives to be successful but wants instant gratification. The older generation was deprived of educational dreams and sometimes worked several jobs to support their family. Money was saved for a rainy day; formal education and luxuries were few and far between. Today’s generation works to spend, doesn’t save enough money for retirement and views work as a means to an end. The generation gap has created a lot of struggles between these two generations and we need to bridge the gap and allow for opinions to be expressed without judgement. Most of us just want to be heard and you may learn valuable information from another perspective.
