SIGNIFICANCE OF PERSONAL VALUES

Have you ever thought about what influences your emotions? Most of us don’t realize how important it is for us to define our personal values rather than to mindlessly follow society trends. We tend to navigate through life in ‘Auto-Pilot Mode’. Values are described as enduring goals that one has set for life, our values help us construct our perspectives, how we perceive our society, and shape our lives according to the values we choose to prioritize. A famously known theory of basic values by Schwartz states that we have 10 basic values. Namely power, achievement, hedonism (self-indulgence), stimulation, self-direction, universalism, benevolence, tradition, conformity, and security. These are diverse values, for example if one chooses to prioritize achievement, it may contradict benevolence. It all comes down to which values we choose to adapt to. Personal values are a great asset once you’ve understood them. One of the main benefits of setting values is that it helps raise selfawareness. Once you know what your limitations are, it’s easy to form solutions. Personal growth stems from this invaluable trait and may help you reinvent yourself to be a better human. These values may help you as an employee too. Once they align with that of the organization you work for, you’ll feel greater job satisfaction and have clear expectations leading to independent motivation. At this point, you may be thinking about what values you should prioritize? Think about your culture, what values your parents opted for, and what is important to you. Values do not have to be good or bad, after all the world isn’t black and white. Once you’ve identified what you want your values to be, it’s time to define them, what they mean to you as people usually have different ideas about values and its importance in their life. I’d like to sign off with a saying by Mark Richardson, he once said “Peace of mind produces right values, right values produce right thoughts and the right thoughts produce the right actions.
